Default Windows WTF

It's been a while since I've done any general support/setup, yesterday was my first experience of Windows 8.

W T F Microsoft, I want my hair back!!

Seems like you have to search for everything, and most of the time you get the wrong answer, just awful interface.

Why can't I finish installing and then once past that entry barrier use email without signing up for a Microsoft account?? I mean WTF, it's not my machine, I'm setting it up for someone... who's not there. Ahhhhhgh!!!

Printer required not one but two 100mb downloads!!! WTF!!

All the **** pre installed, pop ups every few seconds and it crashed!!

The Mac in the office took me all of 3 minutes to set up with email and printer, the Windows machine took several hours.

Get a ****ing grip Microsoft, you've become ****.

There is a way around using an MS account, but then if you want to use downloadable apps (Netflix is one example) it will basically force you to use an MS one

yeah the accounts thing is a pain, and not well explained

they have essentially have 2 now - a "legacy" local one and the new shiny "cloud" based Microsoft account

You don't need a Microsoft email address, you can use whatever email address you like, I put my gmail one in and it worked fine.

Also Windows 8 is/was an abomination however Windows 8.1 update 1 is a fantastic OS and it is what Microsoft should have released it in the first place - they are a million miles apart from being the same thing.

Jack just because you are proficient and used to OSX that doesn't make Windows **** any more than it does a Windows user using OSX who isn't used to it and calling that ****. For the record I like Windows and OSX it just comes down to learning where everything is in different OS's.

This is what happens when you're not used to configuring a proper OS, years n years of being told what you must do, rather than what you are able to do if you use your brain. The years of OSX have taken their toll on poor old Jacky boy.

On this rare occasion, I'm with you on this Jack. Win 8.0 and 8.1 is terrible.

FFS I couldn't even find the recycle bin after I accidentally deleted something (had to google it...then found a load of others asking/complaining about the same thing)

The printer driver maybe the printer manufacturer's fault...Hewlet packard drivers seem to be the worst with being over-bloated and "have" to have drivers downloaded to work, and they are resource hungry too - not good on a Atom CPU. Where others just work straight off without downloading anything (unless its a multi-function printer).

Thanks to MS I'm in a very sticky situation; I need to replace all the work PCs....I'd rather buy proper branded systems off the shelf if I can....BUT they come with win 8 and I don't have the time or inclination to install win7 - nor show/teach me and everyone else in the office how win 8 works (our receptionist will be a nightmare - she shat bricks when we changed from KIS to ECP for the ordering system - its exactly the same system, but different colours). I'd consider OSx but there is so much stuff that isn't supported (mainly the accounts stuff and also the automotive diagnostics) and would need messing about to get it to work that I just would be better off downgrading a PC to win7.

I also need a new laptop on insurance after the old one was stolen.....how the hell do I get the insurance to supply me with a win 7 system.....I guess I'll make do with a mac though....but technically that's betterment

I don't think you understand how much *stuff* there is when you're more than a casual user. Then you need to understand that not all *stuff* is actually there on all versions, good luck learning where that is. It's pretty obvious that you're a computer user, non technical so you'll have trouble seeing my point of view.

Anyhow, I've got to go in again next week as my equivalent of Ali-B's receptionist needs help "finding stuff"

The laptop was £300, couldn't justify a Macbook. My bill would no doubt push the budget into Mac territory if I charged my friend what I should.

Oh i can ensure you i do. Again you are way off the mark if that was pointed in my direction, i work in I.T/Business Analysis/Support/Dev/SQL/VBA etc etc and a power user generally. So i deal with macs and pc's equally 24/7.

You do have a point about it sometimes being annoying to try and find things in Win8.1, but the time it takes to work it out based on previous knowledge or a quick google is negligible. Then once you know and have remembered, its no hassle at all. Also i much prefer this, to have a whole plethora of options and features on the PC available to me in the applications or devices, rather than spending less time on setup to have locked down/nanny features on a Mac!

Windows 8.1 is great, don't like metro ? Install classic shell and it just looks like windows 7, except with proper secure boot and excellent UEFI/SSD support.

The sort of issues as experienced by JC is usually down to the keyboard driver.

The only thing I dislike about the new Windows is the inability to create folders on the start or apps screens. Mainly the apps screen. Hate the way it displays everything. Being able to put things in folders or hide them from the list would make it easier to find apps without remembering the names or pinning them to the start screen.

Think it was a brother, one set of drivers and then management software on top of that to set up wireless.

I have to go back this week, dreading it.
