Installing second (used) HDD...
#1
I've got a second HDD I want to put in my PC. Problem is it's already been used and has WinNT on it (it's from a trusted source).
If I just fit it to the PC and slave off the primary HDD will I get a problem booting up? My promary HDD has Win98SE.
Basically, I just want to format the second HDD and use it for DV files.
How do I go about fitting/formatting it?
Thanks

Nimbus,
You'll have no probs as long as it's the second drive. The boot manager for NT will be on the new disk anyway, so won't interfere with Win98. Just install as slave, boot 98 and run Fdisk to remove the partition(s) on the other drive.

Thanks for the info. I though I would get all sorts of problems.
As I've never added a new HDD before, is it just a simple as using the spare power and slave data ribbons from my primary? Will my PC recognise it? I guess I need to go into the BIOS setting and make sure it's there first.
Can anyone point me to a website with instructions for add a HDD?
Cheers

yup plug it in with your spare power and IDE ribbon. Make sure u have set the jumper on the new HDD to slave. Bootup into bios, and get it to redetect the HDD's, and away you go.
Depending on your bios it might just detect it auto. But its always best to go into the bios anyway to make sure the new drive is listed.

One other question...
Will Win98SE automatically assige it a D: drive letter? I already have
A: Floppy
C: Primary
D: CD-Writer
E: DVD
Games and stuff have been installed via E: so if it re-letters these..
A: Floppy
C: Primary
D: Secondry
E: CD-Writer
F: DVD
Will my games not work because it can not find the CD in the drive it originally installed from.
(just thought - I can either re-letter the drive in Windows (can I?) or just insert the disks into the CD-Writer (E: now) so it finds it with the right letter). Does this make sense?
Thanks!

yes makes sense. It depends on the game. But yeh some might ask for the old CDROM drive letter, in which case you will have to load the game like you say from e:\ or if you want reinstall the game using the CDRom u want to use most
I wouldnt reassign any drive letters using windows though.
U can also move registry settings for installed apps with magicmover in partition magic pro, if u have it.
yes

Jumpers... forgot about that . Luckily there's a diagram on the HDD case to show the position for master/slave.
Changed them now, so will have a go at installing tomorrow.
Thanks chaps!
