Mustek Be@rpaw 1200 CS Scanner and XP

AAAARRRGGGGHHHH!
Ok, got Win XP Pro on my machine. Problem with my new scanner though.
I've downloaded the XP drivers from the mustek site but can't get the thing to work.
I install the drivers, then get "new hardware found" wizar, select the BearPaw1200CS item. Goes through and get an error saing that install not complete because "Installer would not allow class utiilty to be updated" or words to that effect.
I've emailed mustek, but no response.
aaaarrrgghhhh! now what?
thing is, after clicking finsh to get rid of the error the scanner actually works! however, in hardware devices, under properties it says that the device drivers will be disabled on restart!
when I restart the "found new hardware" wizard comes up.
help please!
