my monitor occasionally flashes in different colours
as if there is a problem witht the contrast or colour settings
at other time it is fine

it is still under guarantee but is it on its last legs
bet if i take it back it wont do it as it is internittant

any advice please ?

Check you haven't got any EM sources (speakers etc) close to it, as they will disrupt certain screens.
Otherwise, is probably on it's way out. If it's knackered it's probably cheaper to buy a new one, than try and get it repaired.

Get it replaced under warranty. As virtually all monitors have been sold for some time with a 3 year swap out warranty the courier who brings the replacement and takes away the faulty one doesn't care if the problem is intermittent or not. It's just another box to move from A to B to them.

could be a bent pin in the vga connector...

Question

Is your graphics card okay? That could also cause glitches on screen, although I'd edge towards the Monitor..or Monitor cable.
