No carrier signal?

What could be causing this?
We swapped the cables from straight wire to crossed, checked with BT several times, checked the dial tone, etc, etc, etc.
AOL helpdesk seem to think it is the hyperterminal? Thing is when something is typed in there, no action takes place upon hitting return.
The PC is a P166 running Windows 95.
Any thoughts or ideas?

Haven't done that yet no, I need to go back up to Sheffield and try it out.
The modem was working up until the PC was moved.
Can't think of anything done to it that would cause problems.
Still <shrugs> I shall try that, cheers Chris......

Check the cables haven't been stretched/damaged.
Check that you get a clicking sound, both at the PC end and the socket end. If not, then your cable is damaged.
