Help needed please.
Have a peer-to-peer lan with a mix of Win98/ME/XP Pro machines, all of which work happily together, except that the XP machines have problems printing to printers attached to 98/ME machines.
For example, I successfully printed a test page on one of these printers from an XP machine. 20 seconds later, the printer status changes to 'Printer not found on server' It will then cycle continually between 'Opening' 'Ready' and 'Printer not found...' (when in this status, cannot open printer properties for the affected printer)
Tried STFW - loads of info on how to connect the printer, set the ports etc, but cannot find anything specific to this problem.
Any pointers on where to start looking appreciated.

I assume the Win98/ME machines have the XP drivers installed so that when an XP machines connects it uses this driver?
Does it not make more sense to have a dedicated print server to handle this? (That way,it takes the spooling away from the local machine!)
Just a couple of thoughts for you to be going on with!![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Good luck

Erm, Um, No actually I don't think they have. Didn't realise I needed to. Do I just update the existing drivers to XP ones? and will this still allow machines with earlier versions to print.
How do I go about setting up a dedicated print server?

Since you are running a peer to peer network an easy way of sharing a printer/s would be to use a small network printer server box. Netgear, for instance, do some fairly cheap ones. Have a look in the usual web PC bits suppliers.
