Is it possible to set, per UNIX userid how many times they can be logged in at any one time? We have a couple of users who use SmartTerm and fire up numerous logins thus taking all our license allocation for our back office system.

I'd actually use PAM for this, the pam_limits module. Might take a little while to set up nicely but it's the Right Way to do it. Some applications modify utmp before a user has even been given access to the system.

edit: If you don't want to mess around with PAM on HP-UX you could always try idled. It's always better than messing around with modifying /etc/profile to run a script to parse output etc.

Steve.

Cool

you can also do it if the machine is a trusted system but if it is not, then you can't do it under the normal OS
