Someone passed me a copy of Alien vs Predator II last week and I've been playing it with the sound UP and the lights OFF and I've got to say I'm well impressed!
Think Project IGI is good too - a game you have to use an element of planning and strategy with, but looks like a normal FPS.

played it in the dark with sound up - scared the living snot out of me.....
Can only play it in short bursts - my heart won't take the stress....

Avp2 is top
If you want a cheaper game on a similarly atmospheric theme, try Clive Barkers Undying, now a tenner I believe
Never thrown my mouse across the room so many times

Hmm and I thought it was just me and AVP2 - preordered it 2 months before it was released after seeing the beta demo. MP was cool but single player was awesome. To get the best effect play in an empty house with all the lights off and surround sound on full whack.
As the marine I recall walking along with my pulse rifle and the beep beep of the proximity detector thingy. Then a bang as the roof blows up and I turn and empty a whole clip of pulse rifle rounds, only to discover that the alien tail I thought I was shooting was actually a power cable whipping around - QUALITY!
