It stops you from upgrading/patching anything.
SP1 also contains a new feature which will make it possible for M$ to inflict further upgrades and patches(read enforcement of digital rights) on you without you knowing or consenting
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/26517.html
Better off without it IMHO

there is a util which you can run on an os & it gives you the serial number, so if you run this on a legit copy installed on a server, then you can replace your hookey copy for this one....if you were into piracy, which of course myself & scoobynet do not agree with![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
also, people are currently working on a fix for this new microsoft feature
, it won't be long before this is avaibable.

There's a fix for that too![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
You can just go to C:\Windows\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\SYSTEM\DFS\ and find the file uplddrvinfo.htm. This you can simply delete or rename.
I Dislike the whole idea of MS installing stuff on my PC that I don't want them to. So until someone finds a way around the spyware that's in SP1 I aint installing it.

Neil - know what you mean, as long as you have good antivirus, firewall etc, then at least you know what's going on & who's trying to install/connect to your pc![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)

You can stop the auto install thingy, just go into control panel > admin tools > services and disable the service "automatic updates", then the only way to apply any patches is by you going onto the windows update site, or downloading the patches manually from the downloads section on ms site.

Shunty,
I read the doc and did download the file, there was one zip file that contained the two relevant EXE's. I wasn't actually looking for this, I just read the story on the register and was instrigued as to the workaround. Since leaving university and getting a job I pay for my software now, no I don't buy MS stuff retail, only ever OEM![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Edit to say I don't have the file here, will have to look on other machine for it, though I think I deleted it.

I do wish you guys wouldn't persist in pirating my software.
I have to put my kids through school and heat several swimming pools.
By the way thanks for the xp license key, that should save me a few more dollars!!!
