Im just wondering , why a good graphics card, reccommended.

Im thinking buying
a) another 512mb RD ram
b) New mobo , possibly DDR or RD , depends.
c) a New Geforce 4 4600? or 4400 i think. 128mb

Ive currently got geforce 2 Ti, im just wondering if i got the graphics card. Would i notice the difference when gaming?

Cheers

Si

go for more main memory, the AGP architecture (depending on how it's been implemented) allows a graphics card to dip into main system RAM if needed.

If you're looking for more performance why don't you get an array controller with 128MB cache and mirror the drives? In nearly all cases a bottle neck is found at the disk subsystem.

BTW how many machines do you have? you're always asking questions about new hardware.

I had a standard gf2, and have just upgraded to a gf4 4600ti. Makes a world of difference, (mind you, I've got a 2.533mhz p4, 512mb of 1066RDRAM and loads of other swift stuff as well - gf2 was definitely a bottleneck).

dont think, just buy the best you can afford and get on with it! the best now will be slow in a matter of months.

btw, STFW for hardware comparison. there are website that will answer to your question much better as they do that for a living. i am sure you know that by now so STFFFFW!

Goy my primary machine

P4 1.8 Northwoods
512mb RD ram
Abit TH7 II Raid
Geforce 2 64mb Ti

Ive got another 3-4.

If i buy newer parts for mine , i sell others to my dad or brother, because my old are only 3-4months old.

Money no problem with student loan and all other money im getting soon

My rd is only 800 version.
Ive heard Intel is going to be running in sync,. with DDR. But after looking at the new P4 3.6 it running a hell of a lot faster then the DDR.

i think if i buy more RD im limiting my self with choice when i buy a new motherboard, because my system can only take a 2.4 400Mhz cpu

Talking

how long is a piece of string? why a celeron cost less than a P4? why a lada cost less than a saleen? why some people go to oxford university?

so put on your thinking cap and think why a soundcard can cost £10 and another one can cost £200!

Wait for Granite Bay to come out before you starting throwing more cash at new motherboards.

Intel are dropping RDRAM for the desktop - it's all DDR in the future.

Granite Bay is dual channel DDR. See http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=5099

3.06Ghz P4 with Hyperthreading is due November. Sit tight and wait for me...

Also looking forward to Hyperthreading. Will be running numerical weather prediction models on the desktop if all the info on Hyperthreading is true We really cannot wait to get our hands on one.

Chris,

According the bumpf we got when we ordered these two 530s, the Xeons on board *are* the later version with HT. However, I only had time to get the two boxes setup and onto the LAN last time I was in HQ (I'm a homeworker most of the time) so didn't have the chance to really push them (well, ran the Helios screensaver, very smooth). Anyway, those two machine are destined for other things.

However, we are awaiting the 3+gig chip then we will be ordering a single proc system up (with lots of RAM) to test the promises we have had from Intel that we can indeed run our type of numerical code through it very quickly. I.e. the way we like to do it, very long execution streams, much like the old (but very fast) vector processors we had in the Cray YMP series machines.

If successful, I would be looking at getting a multi proc system so see if we can build on this by running the code in multi-processor modes with the same performance increases.

Well, if we get funding for the work of course.....

In the meantime, when I get the chance, I'll be 'borrowing' some cycles from the 530s to see how they really perform when pushed hard.

Cheers

Ian

In return to Chris B's answer -
On toms hardware, they used RD1066 over DDR for testing the 3.6 cpu, im wondering if its coming back in!

They only used PC1066 RDRAM because on the P4 boards it is currently still the fastest in standard form.

VIA's DDR400 performance is not that strong in the P4 arena.

Like Chris says, Dual Channel DDR will be the way forward. I have told you before half of the reasons why RAMBUS is reaching the end of the road with Intel.

Cheers,

Nick
