Question

I have been running diagnostics and cleanup stuff on my PC tonight, and it is a pain waiting for it to do it.

I was just wondering if there is anyway of automating processes, similar to creating a macro in Office.

i.e. how can I create a program/command which will:

1. Run maintenance, including disk clean, de-frag etc.
2. Clear out old and/or unused files
3. Clean the registry
4. Clear the temp internet files, history, and Temp dir
5. Backup my main files etc onto CD

then finally after all that, close the PC down itself, so I can go to bed and let it do its thing.

All this would be accessible by just double-clicking an EXE from the desktop.

Any takers?

Too late in the day to give you a precise answer & I'm in bed, but investigate the MS Scheduler tool that comes with 98 & above. A lot of your requirements can be carried out using this & the rest done by creating batch files that are run on a schedule.

Cheers chaps

Puff - tried that one, it does some of it, but you have to leave the PC on for most of it to run.

Miles - W98

Chris - will try Tucows also.

DW,

Try AutoIt from HiddenSoft. It's an easy to use scripting tool. I've found it very handy and use it to run some complete tasks. Allows you to run apps, wait for them to finish, shutdown PCs. Lots really...

Let me know if you use it and need any help...

Which reminds me - there is a place near Kirby Lonsdale called Hutton Roof, with signs pointing to it from the main road.

Someone changed the road sign to read Button Moon - had to do a big double take on that one
