Question

I am trying to do an inventory of machines and what Serial Numbers are installed before I leave on my job on Friday. Is there a way to find the Serial Number from within Windows? If I open up System Properties (Win XP Pro) it displays a code xxxxx-xxx-xxxxxxx-xxxxx. This is not the same as the 25 digit code (xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx) entered when you install windows.

Does anyone know if it is possible?

Thanks
Darren

It is possible, but the name of the files it's in escapes me.

Watch this space.

I downloaded a file the other day called GetProdKey.exe

GetProdKey

Edited to say it won't give you all of it, but enough to find a match.

No probs. Its not perfect, as it doesn't give the whole key but its a start.

Proves it can be done though. Anyone fancy writing one that will get the whole thing ?

Can't you look for it in the registry? works for 98 and 95 I think.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\curr entversion

the one you want is the ProductKey entry

Chris

There is no ProductKey entry in XP, just a Product ID which is different to the product key.

Hi,

Follow this link to download a tool that allows you to view the complete installation key, and change it should you need to .
