Help! Win2K Madness!!
#1
Hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on this very weird problem I'm experiencing...
I had to rebuild my laptop today so I formatted and performed a clean install of Win2K - done this countless time before.
After installation had completed I logged in as the local Administrator and preceeded to set my NIC up. Once that was done I rebooted again. However, when it restarted it was stuck on the 'Preparing network connections' screen for ages (6-7mins) and finally gave me a login prompt. I logged in as he local Admin again, ready to 're-add' the machine to the domain. That went fine and required another reboot.
Problem is, the machine will not logon on at all!? I've tried 2 nics, re-installed Win2K 4 times now and get the same problem everytime? My account and profile are fine, the PC has a account in the AD Users & Computers and all DNS entries look fine - where the hell am I going wrong? I've done this procedure countless times before but have never come across this?
Sorry for the long explanation - has anyone one got any ideas about this?
Any help or pointers reallyappreciated!
Cheers,
Ian

This rings a bell, but the folowing is JUST A SUGGESTION!!!
It may be that because your domain already has an entry in its Active Directory for a machine with your machine's name (i.e. from the previous installation) it's getting a bit confused.
The new installation will look like a (slightly) diferent machine (due to GUIDs that are generated on installation).
If this is the case, a possible course of action would be to remove the laptop's "account" on the Domain (from the Domain Controller), then try to add the machine into the Domain again (from the laptop).
Of course, this could be a bunch of cack, and neither myself nor ScoobyNet will accept any responsibility for any unforseen and unwanted consequences, etc. etc.

Yup, that crossed my mind too - I've removed the computer acct from AD since and re-added the laptop with a completely different name too - all to no avail! Bugger...
Any other suggestions??

Many thanks for the additional replies...
suba - not tried 98 as of yet.
Checked all cables, nics, etc...
HHxx - Run mostly run static IP addresses but do run DHCP on a server for some machines. Usually after installation I let DHCP give the machine an address, add to the domain and then assign a static IP.
This morning I re-installed WinXP and I can now logon, etc. I get a message reporting a duplicate name on the network (definately NOT the case??) and I found the following in the (local) event log:
Source: MRxSmb Event ID: 3033
The redirector was unable to register the address for transport NetBT_Tcpip_{E7606323-32FF-4FB9- for the following reason: . Transport has been taken offline.
Followed by:
Source NetBT Event ID: 4321
The name "IAN :0" could not be registered on the Interface with IP address 195.153.10.108. The machine with the IP address 10.0.0.2 did not allow the name to be claimed by this machine.
Our DHCP server IP is 10.0.0.2; DNS is also on the same server.
My machine name is ian.snfa-bearings.co.uk and this is reported correctly in DNS (fwd and rev), AD Users & Computers and DHCP reports the lease correctly.
Help!!!

Yup to both.
As mentioned above I've re-installed XP Pro on the machine in question and had no problems.
In addition to this I've just rebuilt another laptop (exactly same spec) and had none of these problems at all?
Strange eh?

Well, the problem seems to be solved by running XP Pro but at the time, yes, pings via IP and FQDN were successful. That's what confused me the most!
It seems as thought the connectivity was there but just wouldn't log on?
Couldn't find any info regarding the event log entries either.
Thanks to all that have replied though - the 'ScoobyNet touch' is always appreciated
