Question

Have you left it in the stopped state for a while to see if any errors are reported, it sounds like it could be the hard disk drive failing to boot.

Question

I've got a DELL Dimension XPS 350, 128 RAM. When I start it up it recognises the video card, the BIOS version, all the RAM, the hard disk and the CDROM. Then it stops. Hitting the del key for setup just reoprts entering setup does nothing else. The PC wil respond to Ctrl-Alt-Del but nowt else.

Any ideas, guys and gals? I'm thinking motherboard failure

Cheers
Mark

I've left it standing for 15-20 mins - nowt. I've also swapped the hard disk out into another DELL and it boots fine.

This wouldn't be a HDD failure or it would let you in to the BIOS Setup as this isn't stored on the HDD (As you know) sounds like the bios is a bit fecked.... go to a mates PC and download the latest Bios for that motherboard and try and flash it

This may fix your problem..... drop me an E-mail with the result

it can't be RAM because it does a power on cycle test of the RAM and would report all errors!

A BIOS flash is the first thing you should do ! !

Wink

Before you flash the bios, you'll probably want to try just resetting the bios first. Proabably a jumper on the mobo.

Thumbs up

Just spoke with DELL. They suggested swapping the HD to the secondary IDE channel and bingo! the PC boots (I would have got round to trying this eventually, honest)

Need to look a little further to see if its a problem with ribbon cable or the primary IDE.

Now I can flash the BIOS

Cheers guys for your help

Angry

Fecking computers! Contrary or what. To get it working I had unplugged the CDROM on the secondary IDE. Result. Reseated the primary cable and rebooted. Result. Thought "daft tw@t! should've checked the cables first" Plugs the CDROM back onto the secondary and reboot. Nothing! Tries new CDROM on the secondary. Result.

Looks like a dead CDROM. How fecking nuts is that? And on a friday!
