I'll get me coat

Does it need to be a Dell Slimline DVD / CD?

Getting parts for Compaq is easier IMO...

I guessed it was a Chiark special. I just thought they might share the same 'back plane' and hence a CPQ part might fit your Dell CD.

I need a cable that goes from a slimline DVD to a standard 40 pin ide header. There's one in the Dell Optiplex GX240 that works (just tried one).

Problem is that it's not possible to obtain these from Dell.

Anyone got any cunning plans on where to get these? I've tried Upgrade Options, who dell recommended, but they've not got a clue.

For reference, the cable is a 50 pin mini connector to a 40 pin IDE connector...

*help*!

Top man - anything that uses a slimline DVD or CD-ROM in it will have one...

A slimline DVD is JUST the same size as the cupholder in the dash of an MY00.

Coincidence?

The thing on the back of the DVD plugs into the bottom connector.

In the optiplex, it's a ribbon cable with one of those style connectors on one end and a 40pin IDE connector on the other...

Because that board is only available from a stateside supplier, and they want $25, plus $80 for shipping and handling which I feel is a little extreme

If anyone's got an optiplex and doesn't need the CD-rom, please send me the cable . Will pay...

Steven, how long would it be before someone noticed that their CD-ROM wasn't working?

Just had a look at one of our optiplex gx240's and they use a 40pin to 40 pin Cable for the CD.

No cables matching your description

Cheers Avi.

In the one I looked at, it uses a slimline CD-ROM.

The cable has a lump at one end that plugs into the slimline connector. It has a connector on the back that takes power from a floppy-style power connector. A 3 layer ribbon cable then runs off and terminates on a standard IDE 40 pin connector - it's mounted to the IDE connector with a small PCB.

Don't search google for Corer1. There's obviously something about "corer1" that involves Belinda Carlisle for no adequately explainable reason.

I'll try 'em, but discounted them before after STFW and finding that their website says the following when you click "Desktop"

Error Diagnostic Information
ODBC Error Code = 37000 (Syntax error or access violation)

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open database requested in login 'checkapart'. Login fails.

The error occurred while processing an element with a general identifier of (CFQUERY), occupying document position (3:1) to (3:86).

"Hello Blue Haven?"

"I'm trying to get through to Checkapart"

"They're not here any more"

That might explain why their website is broken then...

Compaq might work, yes, if they have a slimline CD-ROM in some of their machines. I only started on Dell because I've actually had the unit working on one of the machines at work

I'll have a quick scout for compaq stuff, unless anyone's got one handy...

The DL360 servers use slimline CD-ROMs... Any ideas where to try, other than STFW?

Nick, I'm not at work at the mo so I can't check. What does the connector look like on the back of a PE2450 server. They use the slimline drives out of the Inspiron laptops.

Just a quick thought on my day off work

Just looked on my Compaq Evo N600 laptop with slimline DVD. The connector looks a bit bigger - I'll take a photo when I get home later.

It isn't for a laptop - needs to be the converter from slimline to standard IDE...
