Cool

May sound like a funny question but I need to know how fast this broadband link is as I have not set it up 'properly'

Cheers Iain, that was a quick response!
Your raw speed was 118596.79 bits per second which is the same as:

Communications

118.6 kilobits per second
How communication devices are rated. Kilo means 1,000 and mega means 1,000,000. Examples include 56k modem and 10Mbit Ethernet

Storage

14.5 kilobytes per second
The way data is measured on your hard drive and how file sharing and FTP programs measure transfer speeds. Kilo is 1,024 and mega is 1,048,576.

1MB file download

1.2 minutes
The time it would take you to download a 1 megabyte file at this speed.

No worries. Just checked mine and it's come out at 645501.43 bits per second, (645.5 kilobits). Not bad for a line that's supposed to be limited to 600

Aha, mines the 600kb ntl broadband. Sounds like you're getting a decent connection speed. On my machine, I found I tend to get faster speeds if I don't use the ntl connection software. I Just configured the connection for dynamic ip etc, and it all works fine.

Try http://promos.mcafee.com/speedometer/

This test is a little flawed from my testing of it though.

Charlie Whiskey the reason that you are seeing that kind of speed is that NTL need to feed 256K to the set top box minimum to feed the interactive service so you get the 256k connection when you order the 128. A bargain if you ask me.

A fraction slower than Christian on my BT Openworld.

Would guess that you have to factor in the contention ratios, and if other people are downloading it slows you down. Reckon I'll run it again later, but a jolly handy site.

Doffo contention.. down to 362kbit per second.

I just knew this would happen when they made it cheaper. Put teh price back up to £40 I say.

Thanks, that explains a lot!

Guess there is no point on paying for it if you can get it for free
