Question

OK - don't come in this forum often....

....however - does anyone here use satellite broadband - I am looking at Silvermead - £35 a month all in.

As I live in a field full of sheep it is unlikely that BT will get around to ADSL locally - at least not in geological time - threshold is 650 - there are 34 registrations of interest

Hello

I don't use satellite Broadband, but have spent some time investigating it.

It really depends what you want to do with it: General browsing around the internet is a poor experience, as is on-line gaming. The reason is the time taken for the request to reach the satellite (in excess of 700ms as opposed to 30-40ms on Broadband and even 50-60 on IDSN!).

If downloading masses of, erm, "stuff" is what you do most, then satellite is okay. You will get a steady throughput of 50kbs with burst speeds of 200kbs(depending on your package).

Satellite *can* be effected by rain.

Depending on what you go for - uplink may be via telephone anyway. So if you want to upload content to web-sites etc then you're no better off.

As boxst says - it really only starts to look attractive if you really need to do large sustained downloads of "stuff"

Puff if you mean VPN over satellite broadband the answer is NOOOOOO!! with satellite you have a latency of at least 1500mS because of the satellite bit which makes VPN's quicker on dialup...

Dave,

I got your email -thank you - the main issue I was concerned about was latency....and I think that has been answered.

I already have some of the hardware - the Silvermead proposition uses a Sky dish and a Satellite broadband modem. Uses ordinary dial-up for upload.

However being a country boy now - I have little or no chance of broadband over the next 3-5 years - my telephone line is so poor my best 'real' download speed is 19.2kbs (which is ****e) and I have a shiny new gargantuan PC that is faster than a fast thing driven by a fast driver!

Is grumpy with BT!
