I have a friend who is getting a Sony digital camera and memory stick, and who wants to connect it all to a laptop. Can you connect the memory stick to any laptop (USB/firewire ??) or does it have to be a Sony one ?

There's a couple of options.
1. use the USB cable that comes with the camera/device
2. buy an adapter that holds the stick then connects via USB
3. Sony do a container that is the size of a floppy and you slot your memory stick into it and put the whole thing into a FDD
4. PCMCIA adapter
I've use the PCMCIA card because I use a laptop all the time and it saves carrying cables around.
