Does anyone have a link to a free connection "keepalive" tool?

I have a server running (voice comms) and don't want the connection to drop after x minutes of inactivity.

Any recommendations, please?

"ping -t www.cisco.com"

in a dos box. Will keep most connections up.

N.b most ISPs will disconnect a dial connection after 2 hours. If you have auto-redial set then you will dial up and get a new IP address. This will take long enough that most connections or applications sessions will have timed out and need to be restarted manually. Obviously if the session is started from somwhere else - they wont know your new IP address....

its a DSL connection that disconnects after 30 mins of inactivity

It "should" do. Some ISPs may have set the connection up to disregard mail client.

Though for the life of me I can't see why anyone would want and ADSL connnection not to be always on. Your IP address may occasionally change with ADSL so you still have that problem. There are service to keep a DNS name in step with a changing IP address e.g. www.dns2go.com though there are some free ones around aswell.

If you going to run a server and leave your connection on at the very least you should run a software personal firewall on your PC. You'd be better of going for a hardware firewall/router from somewhere like www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk though.

There are reasons why I need a dynamic IP. Trust me.

How about we swap then You can have my "Guaranteed dynamic" ISDN connection and I'll have your "occasionally may change IP" ADSL line

You have to move into the sticks though

BuRR,

Try this:

http://www.gregorybraun.com/StayLive.html

It works for me on my ADSL line, and keeps the clock accurate too:
