On my old machine they helped with the internal cooling, as the flat cables restricted the air circulation in the case.
My new PC is a little bigger with more case fans, but I bought the Scan ones this time just in case I want to go down the overclocking route!!

I bought them from Scan when they were on Today Only, very good deal, I think I paid £10 for 2 HDD cables and a floppy, compared to a mate who paid £30 from a modding shop..
