OK, can someone remind me where the option is to turn on critical update notification in W2K Server? Can never remember!

Goto: Start>Settings>Control Panel> Automatic Updates, you can play around with the settings there.

Cheers

I looked on two W2000 Servers at work today and I couldn't see it in Control Panel. Shows there on this W2000 Pro rig though

I know the two servers I looked on have it, as they show the Updates Waiting icon in the taskbar from time to time.

In work now, and my W2000 Pro workstation doesn't show the icon in Control Panel. It's not available in the list of WU Downloads either.

Much strangeness.

You either need to install the Update Services client OR install W2K Service Pack 3.

The only OS's that it comes pre-installed with is XP & 2003 Server

C:/WinNT/System32/wupmnger.exe (or filename like that)

Found a shortcut on the desktop on one of the servers so looked for the location of the original.

Wheels. ah yes. ummmmm. Car is in garage at the moment, and off to USA as of Thurs night for 2 weeks, I will email you when I'm over there and i promise I'll come and get them when I get back.

Go into Computer Management, Services and Applications and disable the Automatic Updates service.

Job done

I will say I don't have it set to autodownload the updates, I manually do that. No way am I letting MY servers be updated automatically. Just I needed to find the little control panel that allowed me to a) change the setting, and b) view and then decide about the latest updates.

What a tube I am. Markus said turn on automatic updates. Doh!

Although, I'd strongly recommend against using the Automatic update service on a server. Even MS don't recommend it - was at the MS conference back in Nov and they recommend the Baseline Analyser. Point this at your server and it will give you a list of needed updates. Download them seperately and then install the hot fixes.

Automatically update a server with patches? No thanks.
