Question

Anybody know of a hardware solution to a problem I'm trying to solve - I want to build up a PC box for my car, and I want to be able to boot up the OS instantly i.e. not sit around for 5 minutes waiting for Windows/Linux to startup. Is there a hardware solution that would solve this for me ?

Would a very small OS partition on something like a compact flash card work ? You can get flash/ide adaptors.

Just thinking aloud.

I don't think you will ever get *instant* , but quick should be achievable.

Use an X-Box instead. Boots in seconds and you can run all your games/music files as well as play games in your car

Use Linux on it too if you like.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys :-

XBox - not an option, due to what I'll be using the PC box for !

Hibernate option - This is my backup plan, if I can't get the PC box to boot up in time.

Flash Memory - This is along the lines I was wondering, just what size flash cards can you get these days, and what sort of costs ? Mind you, to fit something like Windows onto it, it would have to be huge.

Windows CE - Hadn't considered that, just how quickly can it boot up ? What about Windows Pocket PC ? How quickly can that boot up ?

Keep 'em coming....

Windows CE & Pocket PC are the same thing...one is a later version of the other. They both boot very quickly.....

I was wondering about wether I could flash a ROM with Pocket Windows, and get the system to boot up off that - I assume this is similiar to what the PDA's do when switched on.

Anybody got any links for Pocket Windows - purchase costs, tech links (the more techy the better!), etc etc ? Ta !

Windows CE is the OS and Pocket PC is a platform implementation of windows ce. Windows CE can be used for all kinds of embedded devices. It will run on loads of different processors including x86 machines. You'll need to get hold of a copy of platform builder, which is a tool which builds an os image from a bag of components. The os can boot from a hard drive or a flash memory chip. Have a look at www.microsoft.com/embedded for more info.

Compact Flash IDE Adpator

I would have thought you could get linux to boot quite quickly - start with a slim distro anyway and carefull cut out all non-required services. With no GUI to boot it can be doing something "useful" very quickly.

I'd second WinXP hibernate.

My Laptop with XP Pro comes out of hibernate and is ready to use before my desktop PC with W2000 Pro has even finished POSTing.
