Midway thru a KVM install, and the supplied cables ain't long enough, so whilst I wait for longer cables I have a laptop cabled up to the KVM working fine, using the desktops keyboard, mouse and video.

Hence desktop has no kvm.

so was wondering if I can remotely install something like VNCserver onto the desktop, or do I have to start replugging everything back into the desktop, install vncserver, then plug stuff back into the KVM!

cheers,

greg

What OS?

If its Win2k/XP then u can start a service called Telnet. Telnet into the machine gives u a command prompt of the remote machine. This may work, never tried it though..

Greg,

Is it a ProLiant you are building? If so does it have an iLOE? If yes then you could access it via RDP and build the server that way. Alternatively boot to a network using PXE and build the server from a network share.

If it's a blade then connect a laptop via the USB connector at the front of the server.

If you have admin access, you can run any program remotely using psexec from PsTools, available from Sysinternals. You can only start programs though, as you don't get any UI.

Thumbs up

Yes, you can.

I've used this to roll it out to 100+ desktops and 20 servers.

All you need is RPC access to the Windows box and the admin account if your working with NT/W2K/XP.
