Question

We currently use a Netgear RP114 but this is with NTL as our ISP. I am under the impressions that I need a different router as the Netgear one is suited for cable technology.

Not fused about wireless, both of our 2 pc's are in the same room, but I need IPSec support and would ideally like NAT as well.

Any suggestions. I would quite like to stay with Netgear and would not mind an additional fire (hardware?)

Thanks
Darren

Westell do a four port ethernet router with USB support which also has IPSEC - think it is the 2400 model but not cheap

without USB but with IPSEC, Zyxel do the Prestige 652 I think? 0r is it the 643! - have a look on www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk

Cheers, Jon

I can vouch for the Zyxcels being very good units!!!

My Company has over 50 installed at customer sites and we hardly ever have an issue with them and when we do the Tech support is 1st class!!!

Anyway just my 2p's worth but if u want any more info the mail me and I will be happy to help!!

BTW I use a Zyxcel for my Pipex ADSL and never touched it in 2 years!!!

Yup - running a Zyxel Prestige 650HW (4 ethernet ports plus wireless ) - I think the telnet interface is superb

We (an ISP) have nearly a thousand Zyxel units in business customers premesis up and down the country - I chose them specifically because of the ease of config and next to no support issues (always going to be some support issues with end users ) - not the cheapest but one of the best

Hi Darlodge

Your correct in thinking you need a certain type of router. The ones you need to look at are commonly known as Cable/DSL or Internet Gateway Routers. Basically they are routers without an built-in modem. The key to identifing them is the WAN port will be RJ45

For single session VPN Pass-thru, SPI Firewalling, NAT etc then the D-Link DI-604 is excellent value for money. If you want to stay with Netgear then the FR114P is worth considering. If you need multiple VPN pass-thru then the D-Link DI-804v is an powerful router for the price

Have to agree - ZyXEL kick **** when it comes to robustness The only problem is that they work only work on ADSL.

Cheers guys,

Is the ZyXEL Prestige 650HO (£139 inc VAT) any better or any worse than a Netgear DG814 (£104 inc VAT)?

One think I forgot to add is that I need 4 Ethernet ports as well as IPsec etc. At the moment I am swaying to the ZyXEL 650HO due to the good words of the users here.

Oh and I will be going with Nildram now and not Pipex

Thanks
Darren

650HO has more features than the DG814 and at the mo the zyxel reliability is superior to Netgears

Quick break down

DG814 Security - NAT firewalling
650HO Security - NAT firewalling with packet filtering.

DG814 NAT features - Single IP only with (soon to be added UPnP support)
650HO - NAT features - Supports Single and Multiple (Multi-NAT) IP addressing. UPnP is soon to be implemented.

DG814 VPN - Supports Single session IPSec VPN Pass-Thru
650HO VPN - Supports Single session IPSec VPN Pass-Thru (never tested it put ZyXEL confirmed its supported )

DG814 Reliability - Router is maturing well
650HO Reliability - Its better than scoobies (well, only just )

Are there performance benefits using a adsl router on a single pc, over the standard issue USM modem?

Latancy (response) time is better on a router than a USB modem. The time you would really notice it is when you are playing online games

IMO USB shouldn't be used for an Internet connection (thus we don't sell any ) USB was designed for plug'n'play devices like scanners, cameras, printers etc

If your happy with your USB connection and you aren't a hardcore gamer then your USB setup is fine If it ain't broke then don't fix it
