Need to recover seemingly Dead hard disk
#1
RIght folks. One of the thing I love about this board is the sheer variety if professional people.
Here is my situation: I have two hard disks, one set to primary master (Which Runs OS and apps_) another one, d: drive which has ****loads of data on it which i can't afford to lose.
The BIOS picks the drive up fine as a slave, even gets the size right, bu i cannot see it in Windows (98).
When looking in Fdisk it does not have a drive letter assigned and is listed as a non DOS partition.
Can anyone PLEASE PLEASE help on getting my data back, if i could just assign a drive letter to ot i'm sure it will be fine.
Thanks in advance.

Assuming that the drive is spinning then the first thing to do is to copy it using something like ghost. You will need a spare drive to copy it too.
You may find that ghost fixes the partition for you once you.
There are a number of tools that may fix the partition if ghost doesn't do it for you.
But only play with the copy keep the original just in case you want to send it off to one of the disk recovery people Ontrack etc. though these guys charge an arm and a ******** for their services..

Foot tapper has a good point.
If it's defo FAT16 or FAT32, then have a look at the Ontrack Tools:
http://www.ontrack.com/easyrecoveryprofessional/
The Trial Version of EasyRecovery will let you see what you could retrieve without paying for it.

Got exactly the same problem but the other way round. W2k HDD, was working fine, then crashed big style - it tried to sort itself out and is now seemingly majorly fubared.
Bios sees it fine, windows doesn't.
Have tried all the normal things - hitting with lump hammer, throwing at wall, screaming at it, crying, pleading etc but to no avail lol.
May try ghost. Once it's off the sledgehammers coming out
Edited cos I can't speel for sheet

Mail me if you need the software to recover your data. Its about 30Mb in size. Shunty has a copy on FTP too if you need it.
I used it the other day to recover 15Gb of data, which it did in its entirety even after 3 formats.

On a similar note, anyone know how to recover a HDD that can not be recognised?
This one was lost in my huge system crash, and just cant be seen. Something obviously fried in the bang.
How much do the recovery firms charge, as it only has MP3's on really.

I have done this before but not generally recommended.
And would only try it on a disk, which seemed totally stuffed,
and you need to get it working.
Using an identical disk, undo screws from both.
If i remember correctly disk will split in two.
One half houses platters, the other electronics.
Take the elecs from good disk and match to the others platters.
It has worked for me in the past.
****** This will invalidate any warranty.******

Davie - went thru this exact problem the other day.
One quick and painless option is to go here
The free demo (which is tiny) will show you all the files and folders its possible to recover from the fault drive.
- If you choose to pay a small online fee, it'll recover your stuff and copy it to a folder on the working hard disk.
- From there you can repartition your faulty one and format it.
- Lastly, just copy the recovered data from one drive to the other.
