I notice IBM are doing some sizeable IDE hard disks, can get 180gb for £150 - seems like a good price to me.
However, the current IBM I have(40gb)and 2 or so years old is really quite noisy - and I want a quiet one(my Seagate is very quite)
So anyone got one of these biggys? if so how noisy is it??
thanks
Andy

Andy - I got one of the 120Gb drives and it really is quiet! It is now drowned out by the PSU fan so I have to rely on the light to know when it's accessing the disk. Go on buy it, you won't be disappointed

I would watch it - I have heard many nasty storys about IBM disks and had a 40 gig one go on me once upon a time.
However they may have sorted themselves by now. I would wait until you have heard a few more comments first on here, just to make sure.

I'd be very wary. Do a Google for IBM Deskstars (aka Deathstars).
As said it did relate to the older 40Gb drives, but could potentially be an issue. May be worth paying a little more for a more reliable brand.
We have had 2 of these drives die in the last few weeks in our IBM PC's.

The thing I worry about with hard drives is that when they go it is often difficult or impossible to get stuff back. Other components dont matter as much in this respect but unless your very good at backing everything up then I would be carefull. Some things are cheaper for a reason. It's up to you but Seagate and Maxtor would get my cash every time!

Chris, you are biased
lol Ill talk to you on Monday about its quiteness, as you may know Im on a silent pc building mission
I had a 40 gb deathstar, it died after 3 weeks, the other one has been fine for 2 years.
Im sure IBM must have sorted themselves out by now right??
Seem like good value, and I fancy totalling 200gb on my pc, I have so much bandwidth at the moment Im filling 1-2 gb a day in films
