XP very slow to respond

Since installing critical updates yesterday, I have noticed WinXP has become very slow to respond to mouse clicks (opening programs takes 15-20 seconds, whereas they usually take 2-3 seconds). Internet Explorer is the same.
Before I use system restore to get back to a previous config, has anyone else had the same problem?
