Since installing a Seagate Barracuda 80GB (Windows 98SE) my computer's start-up has been much slower.

The opening Bios screen shows for at least twice as long as it did with a single Hard-drive, as the RAM counts up to 256 slowly in increments of 2. The 'beep' that indicates the operating system opening is now also a longer sound.

However, once operating, everything seems fine (so far).

Is this what I should expect, or is this a symptom of a problem I need to get sorted?

Is your BIOS set to auto-detect IDE devices?

If so, is it correctly identifying all devices?

Check the jumpers on all IDE devices to ensure you do not have a conflict (ie 2 slaves or 2 masters on one channel)

Thanks Fig

How do I check / set BIOS to auto-detect? Will check your second suggestion after this.

I was more thinking along the lines that it was auto-detecting, which was taking the time.

To check, go into the BIOS (usually F2 or DEL) and look for "IDE Auto-Detect" or similar. Before changing anything, post back with how it is set at present.

Fig

The new drive has been recognised and is listed on start-up, and named 'D' moving my DVD player to 'E', and CD writer to 'F' etc. I am sure the new drive is properly registered as slave to the 'C' drive.

Please take a look at my BIOS settings and see what you think:

Except I can't get turbosport to upload, so yhm instead!

Much appreciated
