Right Click My Computer
Manage

Find 'Services' in the left hand tree and click

Find 'Messenger' service in the right hand window and double click to change it to disabled

If you're getting messages via Messenger though, you're firewall isn't working or you don't have one!

Note Messenger service is NOT related to the MSN Messenger chat applet.

Windows messenger is installed with xp, thought it was msn messenger so left it. Hadnt installed the firewall then, all sorts of rude things where coming up. I then realised it wasnt the normal msn chatty so uninstalled it. The cheeky buggers...

just looked at the 'services' and it says that its nothing to do with the messenger that sends these dodgy messages???

'Transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. This service is not related to Windows Messenger. If this service is stopped, Alerter messages will not be transmitted. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.'

Trust me. Disable that messenger service. I had this issue and that was the cause. This site has some useful help on what you can safely disable/stop.

IM - Messenger and MSN Messenger are different things.

It is the Messenger service that allows the annoying pop-ups, stop them by disabling it.

If Messenger is allowing them in the first place, your PC is vulnerable to hostile attack, meaning your firewall is either not working or non-existent.
