I'm about to upgrade my old P3 and need some advice. On the processor front should I go for a 533 or 800 fsb. And I assume I will nedd a 533 or 800 motherboard to match. There seems to be loads of different memory available any thoughts on which type ?
Thanks
Thanks

If you want a P4, then I'd go for a Pentium 4 'c' revision which is the 800Mhz FSB. The C revisions are available in 2.4, 2.6, 2.8 and 3.0Ghz.
Get an 875P board, add a pair of DDR400 (aka PC3200) RAM sticks (Corsair TwinX set if you can afford it).
As a quick example from Overclockers (other stores are available
) :
P4 'Northwood' 2.4CGHz (800FSB) with HT Technology - £131.50
Abit IC7 "Canterwood" - £101
or
Abit IC7-G Max-2 Advance "Canterwood" - £144
or
Asus P4C800 Deluxe "Canterwood" - £137
Corsair 512MB DDR XMS3200 TwinX (2x256MB) - £112
All + VAT.

All the usual suspects - Anand, TechReport, Tom's, HardOCP have pages on 533 vs 800...
Not to mention you can get HT on 2.4Ghz and upwards at 800Mhz. The 2.4Ghz C overclocks great by all accounts (see HardOCP - they got a 1Ghz FSB with stock air cooling).

Thanks for all the replies,
what do you think of :
Asus P4c800 Deluxe
Intel P4 2.8G (800 FSB)
Big Fan thingy
Corsair TwinX Memory 2*256 mb matched
All this for £560 inc vat
I already have a Geforce Ti500 so I think that can survive for now.
Comments please

Dont think you can go wrong with the Asus or the Abit. There is also the MSI i875 Neo for around £145 IIRC. Id go for the Asus and MSI over the Abit after the reviews Ive seen.

Si,
No compatability issues. It's a stop gap card for when my colour coded hercules card arrives. As seen on a another post,

it's a stunningly capable card, just the wrong colour...

Downside of the Asus is that it puts the Gigabit NIC on the PCI bus and doesn't use the new high bandwidth link Intel have provided in the 875PE. Damned if I can remember the name of it though.
Mind, I doubt many people have Gigabit at home yet so it's hardly a big black mark

Chris - CSA GBit LAN is what your referring to I think!
It also uses an external 3rd party (Promise) RAID Controller instead of using the integrated Intel one.
Both at an attempt to save (what seems minimal) cost. The MSI 875 board has both and also includes pretty much all cabling (inc 4 serial ATA cables and power adapters).
If I was buying now Id choose the MSI board personally.
Simon.
