Using my broadband to access the internet but I also want at the same time to use a dial up access for my work on the same pc(they only allow dial in at the moment)

I have all the splitter installed correctly on the socket and when using broadband I have no problem with using the normal phone line.

However when I am logged on using broadband and Idial up using my internal modem, the number is called, the connection is just about to be made and I get the following message:

Dial up Networking was unable to complete the connection
Error 645
The Microsoft Dial-Up Adapter is in use or not responding properly.
Disconnect other connections and then try again.
If this problem persists, shut down and restart your computer.

Now I have a USB external modem (usb connected) for broadband connected to the pc part of the splitter and a separate internal modem for dial up connected to the phone part of the splitter.

Do I need to set anything up to get both of them to work together?

Disconnect the USB modem before you dial work, you can't have both on at the same time...

When I say disconnect, I mean hang up, not unplug it, I'm sure you know what I mean

You being connected to the internet and then dialing in to work would make your work's network more open to hackers as hackers can 'piggyback' down your connection.

Yes that works no problem. I just wanted to access it while using broadband so I could search the internet very quickly and test out some pages, which I have to develop when I dial in. I know it doesn't take long to connect to broadband but it is a pain to have to connect to the dial up connection each and every time.

So even though I can use the phone line when connected to broadband, I cannot use the same line to dial up using my internal modem?
Is there nothing in the dial up adapter that will allow it to be shared between 2 connections? I presume that the microsoft dial up adapter deals with both modems and therein lies the problem?

Question

Never tried it, but I don't think you can make 2 connections to 2 different ISP's at the same time can you?

I can be connected on BB, and use an internal 56k modem at the same time for faxing/uploading to my poxy website. I use a router as opposed to a USB modem if it makes any difference.

You can do it if your adsl modem connects to a network card, but not is its USB, as you are still using DUN when connecting via a USB modem, and only one connection is allowed at any one time.

Thanks for the help.
A PCI Network adapter and an ethernet enabled ADSL modem/router might need to be invested in then.

Is the Speedtouch 510v4 ADSL router any good?

Yup, the ST510 v4 is a good router. I've installed quite a few now on customer sites and bar one being DOA, the others have been working fine. Some have been up for two months or more. Gets a thumbs up from me.
