I think I'm on the final level of Halo, but I can't work out how to blow up the exhaust ports. I press the button to open the port, then fire a rocket into the opening but nothing happens. There's a double arrow/beacon that seems to be in the centre of the opening (the ones with the distance marker) but I can't get close - do I need to?

This is driving me nuts.

Its been along time since i completed this game, but just to remind me about it are the exaust opening and closing you have to throw grinades in when they open i think. And it isnt the last level there is another and its even tougher lol.

yeah... tha's the level. The mission objectives say you either throw grenades or fire rockets.
