![Question](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/icons/icon5.gif)
My father in law called me today that his comp is shutting down all the time. Mainly every time he opens any program. Always he gets this message window:
-------------
This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress. The shutting down was initiated by NT Authority System.
Windows must now restart because the remote procedure code (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly.
"Counter in seconds counting down before restart"
------------
Each time it comes up with a sound of gong.
Any ideas?
He's on ADSL and running Win XP.
It's his work comp (just one in his office) so he's stuck and as he's in Sidcup I'm wandering if it can be solved over the phone before I'll drive all the way down there.
I appreciate any help.
Thank you
Robert

BTW, Velryba, you could use Remote Assistance to help him. Probably no use on this occasion as his PC will keep shutting down until the patch is applied and the corrections made, but worth considering for the future.
I use it quite a bit to assist "friends" (what is it they say about a friend in need?

no this time I have to have a drive down South, also I'll have to install a firewall as it seams that there isn't one...
but for the future it's not bad idea
