My girlfriend's Mom has one of these compact lifestyle pcs that are not upgradable, and it does not have 10/100 LAN. She wnats to upgrade to ADSL broadband. I take it that you must have a network card to get ADSL, so can you get an external USB one or some other workaround??

No. The USB plug goes to the PC USB port and the telephone lead goes to your ADSL Line Filter and BT Socket. No Network card or additional hardware required.
You would need a network card if using an ADSL Router or most Cable Broadband Modems.

Plenty of USB ADSL Modems available, cheap too.
Have a look on ebay for the Alcatel ones.
