HOw mini, how silent?
Mini-itx with via Nemiaiaiaiah M10000 board would be my choice, in the Fun e-note case...
http://www.Mini-itx.com. Ewan, the proprietor, is a top bloke.
Cheers,
Nick.

Ive built one, what do ya want to know I have the following
Epia 800MHz fan cooled MOBO (on board LAN,sound, grpahics etc)
256MB SDRAM
Single IBM Laptop CD Drive
40 GB Normal Size harddrive
In the office the machine can barley be heard, but running in a quiet room the buzz of the fans **** me off.

Absolutlely - the smallest and quietest is the Epia platform.
The M (multimedia) series are pretty good. Sound on the 800 and 5000 is poor with no bass response, so if you're thinking of multimedia then you should look at the "M" series. To get acceptable multimedia out of the 800 I've added a graphics card with DVD acceleration and USB sound (edirol UA-1A).
Even the M will be poor at games.
The shuttle, if you need power, is difficult to beat but there's plenty of alternatives coming around in that size category.
Size/space/noise = epia
Slightly larger/slightly noisier/lots more powerful = Shuttle
