I have been trying to link my desktop PC to my Laptop PC with a RJ45 crossover cable. Somewhere down the line I have screwed up, as my desktop now goes into "Not Responding" mode at every opportunity. I removed the Preventon firewall which helped a lot, it is now occasionally freezing. My first question is, can I somehow trace what is causing my PC to not respond? I am assuming that there is a software conflict somewhere down the line.

The second question (after I,ve sorted my desktop) is as follows :

I have :
1) 1 x desktop PC - XP Pro
2) 1 x Laptop - XP home
3) 1 x RJ45 Crossover cable

I want to be able to swap/transfer files between PC's. Can anybody point me in the direction of a step by step process to set up my PC's to talk to each other, thus preventing me from knackering my Pc's.

Any help is appreciated,

Craig.

Assuming you have a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet adapter in both machines, then do the following:

a) Enable the adapter on each machine and ensure TCP/IP is bound to the adapter on each machine

b) Give each machine a unique IP address, I suggest picking two addresses from one of the three private (non Internet) address ranges:

i) 10.0.0.0 thru 10.255.255.255 with a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0
ii) 172.16.0.0 thru 172.31.255.255 with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0

or

iii) 192.168.0.0 thru 192.168.255.255 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

c) Enable NetBIOS if you wish, though if you're connecting to the Internet, make sure your router blocks NetBIOS, or use a desktop firewall product

d) Enable File and Printer sharing on the adapters

Each machine should then be able to ping the other by IP address or computer name. You can then start mapping drives, Etc.

Cheers

Nog
