Your video codec is probably out of date. Chances are it's a DivX movie, so download this program to install the current codec. The home page of DivX is at DivX.com.

Check on the player for a version update - sometimes it needs extra codecs to play certain files. I usually find if Windows Media player can't hack it, then QuickTime usually will.

Naturally this is a non copyrighted film?

Try looking at DivX and take it from there. Their support section then lists the common faults.

If you right-click on the file, and go to Properties\Summary\Advanced (depending on Windows version), does it list any useful information, like the name of the codec used?

If the film you've downloaded is a pirate copy it could be to do with the new government crackdown. Make sure you unplug your webcam and disconnect all speakers and microphones as I've heard rumours of the authorities listening and looking into the homes of software, music and film thiefs.

The name of the codec (and sound codec if differs) is often in the filename.

Could also be Indeo codecs. Look up Indeo XP Codec on Kazaa and install that.

Hello

Download the delightfully name G-Spot. This tells you the codec that you require and whether it is installed.

That is untrue!

I'd just like to make 2 points!

1)
For a start the government would require a warrent for each individual physical address to be able to legally monitor you in such a way

2)
Such an action you descibed would also be contravention of the computer misuse act which covers such things as unauthorised access to computer systems. This applies to joe public and governments alike

info here: http://www.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts1990...00018_en_1.htm

So contary to whether it is from a reliable source, it is still very very very doubtful that there is any truth in it, as I said, it is against the law for even the government!!!!

Question

EK - If you have a webcam/mic on and published then the pictures are in the public domain so no warrant would be needed. Same for shared music files etc.

Scary thought...
