what is the diference between the amc athlon xp2800 thoroughbred core (2.25ghz) and the xp2800 barton core (2.17ghz)?
basically confused as the 2.25ghz one is £40 cheaper than the barton core one on scan.co.uk

The barton core has double the cache (512kb) which can be an advantage in some applications but then again the thoroughbred core has a faster clock speed which can also be an advantage in some applications.
The general view is that the performance rating of Thoroughbreds is pretty much spot on whereas with the barton, AMD are being a bit optimistic

I would get a decent nForce2 mobo from Asus, MSI, Epox or Abit. You should be able to get one for around £70. Regards, future upgrades, there is no option really. The new Athlon64 uses a different socket connection, so you just have to accept that your next upgrade will be another mobo/processor combination so try not to spend too much. The only future upgrade option would be an Athlon 3200+ which wouldn't really be that much of an improvement over a 2800+. I have a similar spec to wot you are upgrading to & am very happy with the performance & know I will have it for a fair while as I won't upgrade to Athlon 64 until they are cheaper faster & there is plenty of 64bit software about.
