Have loads of images upon which I need to select a rectangular area of a specific size and then crop the images to the selected area. Is there a way I can specify the exact size of my selected area, so I can then use 'Crop To Selection' to crop them and they'll all end up the same size ? Or perhaps another way ?

When cropping pictures I do the following.
Put the selection box around the area I want to crop. Check on the status bar that the aspect ratio is either 0.750 (portrait) or 1.333 (landscape) and adjust the box until it is.
Then crop.
If it's going to the printers, then job done.
If not, I then resize to the appropriate resolution, e.g. 800x600. For screen display (e.g. on a website) of portrait shots, I keep the vertical resolution the same as before (e.g. 600 in the above case) and allow the horizontal resolution to vary, so I'd end up with one that was 450x600.

Just record a script that has you placing the crop selection box and then double-clicking it to actually crop. Then you can just playback the script against any other image you have loaded.

If you have to do 100's of images, use the Batch | Process command on the File menu to replay this script on a directory (and/or subdirectories) at a time.

Easy squeezy.

Ian - Thing is the selection I want isn't always in the same place and when I record a script it selects the same area rather than giving me a selection of the same size. Or am I doing something wrong ?

To try and explain further . . . I have taken photos all of my staff, head and shoulders (no you can't have copies ) I need to crop to a neat head-only view and make them all the same size. Obviously each persons head is a different size and each photo is zoomed slightly differently. Any ideas ?

Edit: What I'd like to be able to do is load a specific sized selection which I can move around the image. Possible ?

Yeah, that's what I wanted too
Couldn't figure it out so ended up doing it the way described above.

Surely it wouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility to provide a selection box the same aspect ratio as the picture that you could grab a corner of and size (keeping the same aspect ratio) and drag around until it was where you wanted it? PSP v9 feature?

Mmmmm, good one.

Nearest thing I can think of is to make a selection and save that selection to disk (Selection | Load/Save Selection | Save Selection to Disk). On the next image you can load that selection back, move it where you want it and then crop to selection.

It'll be a bit of a drag but at least every image will then be the same size.

I guess the real problem is getting the selection size right.

Of course, this won't fix the fact that everybodies heads are different sizes.....

I might not have thought this through thoroughly and I also used Photoshop to do it but the priciples are the same for both.

Open up all your photo's on the screen.

Use any one of them as your background and drag all the others into it thus creating multiple layers.

Position and size each layer as you want it either by turning off each layer as necessary or by changing the opacity (so you can compare each one to another)

Once you are happy, place crop over the lot and snip !! all are now the same size.

Then just print each layer or seperate them again.
