Sorry to bother you all again but this is driving me crazy:
I've had bt broadband for just over a week now, and every time I try and turn my pc off or put on standby or disconnect from the internet the thing just freezes up on the saving settings part of the shutdown (if that makess any sense)
or if I try to disconnect through all the means possible, the thing crashes and I cant do anything with it.
I've installed all the windows updates but that didnt fix it,
What else can I do cause turning it off by the plug in wall will only cause more problems,
Cheers Mike.
ps the broadband seem fine its just the disconnect that I have problems with.

Do you run antivirus software with up-to-date definitions?

Have you called BTopenworld (or whoever you got the broadband off)support? It may be a known problem and they may know how to fix it?

I know it could take a bit of time, but try running scandisk, then a defrag. May be some loose clusters or corrupt files that are causing the crashes

Are there any error messages prior to the crash or exiting IE.

I've asked a couple of people and someone asked me to ask you this....

he may "possibly" have an IRQ conflict between the Network card and possibly another card Sound/viseo etc, get him to go to start/run and type dxdiag, when thats finished loading there's a button to save it to a text file, paste that here.

Also, when disconnecting from the internet, do you right click on the transfer things on the system tray to disconnect?

Question

Confused - why do you need to disable your AV to see pictures on Scoobynet???

Time for an upgrade of your AV package I think....

Chris

Do you access the internet through the BT icon or through Internet explorer icon? Mine installed a BT Yahoo broadband icon that does loads of stuff other than open IE

Try booting up, using the PC but not the internet and then shutting down. This will tell you if it is browser related or OS/hardware related.

i don't know anything about XP home, but I guess there's an event log in it? Have a look to see if there's anything in the event log, as that's a good place to start.

Had a look and nothing has been modified in the last 6 months according to the event log, I do think it is a browser problem, I know its hard to find the problem because I havent got a clue what I'm looking at etc, etc, etc.

Right, if I disconnect using the dissconnect hardware icone in the bottom right hand side,I can turn the computer off without it crashing, BUT in order to reconnect I have to pull out the usb cable for the modem and then put it back in to turn the modem off, there must be an easier way of doing things?

USB modem ?

Have you got the green frog Alcatel modem ?

If you have then you will need to upgrade the drivers, do a google on Alcatel USB drivers.
