Computer started playing annoying sounds?

I am guessing I have somehow downloaded a virus or something, because when I am working on my computer for no apparent reason it just starts playing sounds, of a a high pitch thing laughing and the something mechanical starting up. I have done a virus scan and nothing has come up and everything looks normal in task manager.
So my second question is how do I get to the windows sound files, the ones at startup etc. to see if any have been added or over written?

There is a sound icon in the control panel.
Could it be a banner ad on a webpage? There was a particularly annoying one for HSBC last year sometime, kept making tweeting noises [img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img]
