As steve has said phpbb, although if you want something a little bit more than just a forum postnuke is fantastic, i'm slowly learning how to use it thanks to a mate on here

You'll need a web host with php and mysql but all these forum programs are very easy to use

Well Mr.Cookie managed it, so I would think that you should be fine!

You just need to make sure that you have teh information that you need from your hosting company, mysql server name, mysql database name, mysql username and password, and other than that the install scripts do pretty much everything else for you.

If you don't mind having a banner advert at the top you can get a free forum and hosting from http://www.invisionfree.com/

Then you could get yourself a free domain name from http://www.dot.tk and turn off the adverts in the menu.
