Connecting Laptop to Desktop

I'd like to be able to plug my laptop into my desktop so that I can backup files from the laptop etc...
Desktop Windows 2000
Laptop Windows XP
Can you do this ?? Will a USB lead enable me to do this...
Help required...

No a usb lead on it's own won't
If both machines have a nic card (also known as network card, ethernet and probably a few others) then your best bet is to buy a crossover cable (should be about a tenner), if not and it's only small text file stuff then a serial link is cheap but i've never done that so can't help there
Another alternative is to buy a usb memory stick and transfer files via this here28mb one for 32 quid[/url]

No prob Si I think I saw a USB toaster the other day
Ethernet would certainly be quicker, but sometimes getting a peer-to-peer network working can risk hair loss...
