Windows XP - everything is in windings?

Not my pc (thankfully) - suddenly the PC's just showing windings as the font for everything. They have tried changing default font but I think something else has gone very wrong with the machine..
Anyone seen this before? - any ideas what it is.. (prolly a virus)
