Bought some bits and bobs from a local police auction, and in one lot i have got what looks to be a quite new Laptop Sony PCG-9J1m. But as soon as you turn it on a screen flashes then it asked for a password it looks like a BIOS password as it comes up so quick. Is there anything i can do?

Hello

Have a search on google, unfortunately some of them require a "dongle" to be plugged in to reset the password. Others you can just remove the battery (the small one on the motherboard) and it "forgets" the settings.

Get the latest bios update.

Next get a bios flash program from sony website and clear bios and then update - password gone. Or open slot for ram and bridge the CMOS reset pins. (Allegedly)

I have the answer:

Find the file Killcmos.zip using Google and download it. It's free and it will clear the password.

Or as you now legitimately own the laptop call Sony who can give you a password thatll unlock it

I'm assuming theyll do it even though you bought it at auction.

No they wont unlock it - they need a proof of ownership certificate from new (checked sony site) and they will do it for $200 ouch.

killcmos works, have done it already.
