I have just recieved this:

Our virus detector has just been triggered by a message you sent:-
To: <debby@srcm.co.uk>
Subject:
Date: Thu Jan 29 17:50:11 2004
Any infected parts of the message have not been delivered.

This message is simply to warn you that your computer system may have a
virus present and should be checked.

The virus detector said this about the message:
Report: /home/spool/MailScanner/incoming/RAA06667/text.zip->text.scr Infection: W32/Mydoom.A@mm

However I have not sent any emails to the address shown and I use a web based email address what can I do?

I've had about 30 of the things

No, you are likely to NOT have a virus, although you need to satisfy yourself by using proper uptodate AV software.

This particular example harvests email addys from an infected machine, then sends out to them with the sender's address randomly selected from the harvested email addys.

It then "appears" that you sent it & any bounce message or Virus Detected message will return to your address.

bundle of fun eh?

The virus arrives in an email message as follows:

From: (Spoofed email sender)
Do not assume that the sender address is an indication that the sender is infected. Additionally you may receive alert messages from a mail server that you are infected, which may not be the case.

Subject: (Varies, such as)

Error
Status
Server Report
Mail Transaction Failed
Mail Delivery System
hello
hi

You may want to download McAfee Stinger to check your system anyway
As you havent said you have Anti-Virus running

I have AVGs free virus scanner which I regularly update and a firewall. I perfom a scan every two days. So I do not believe I have a virus.

Am I right in thinking that AVGs free scanner is good enough to perform the task or do I need a branded name like nortan?

I used Norton AV for a couple of years. It seems quite effective but recent reviews (in computer shopper I think) revealed that it was not as effective as some other lesser known names. Kaspersky labs did rather well I think.

Norton AV also seems to hog system resources somewhat. So I am looking for a replacement. Does anyone on here use Kaspersky?
