Hi all,
I have lost all my USB devices, none of them are recognised by windows.
I have even re-installed XP to no avail!
Basically, device manager says that no drivers are installed for the USB controller (Code 28), and there is no USB root hub showing on the list at all.
I have tried copying drivers from an identical PC at work, and uninstalling the USB controller.
Windows finds new hardware on start-up, tries to install, then says there was aproblem installing the device "data was invalid".
I have even tried installing a Pci USB2.0 card, but it won't even detect it.
Any ideas what to try next?
Thanks for any help in advance.

P.S. may take me a while to see replies, as my ADSL modem is USB, so using laptop with faulty cooling fan, and fan heater sitting on top of wastebasket to cool it!

Have you tried the USB devices on another machine to prove that they are working.
I presume you have tried the system restore if you have it enabled) and try dropping back to an earlier date and try again.
Check the wires (if any) from the little USB block to to the motherboard
Whoops should of read it more closely - As you have stated that have reloaded XP it could be your mobo that has developed a fault

Richard,
Thanks for the reply.
Yes the USB devices do work on another pc, I'm using the dsl modem on this laptop.
Is there any way of testing the Mobo?
Steve

Just a thought (well a few)
Check that USB is enabled in the bios
& you said that reloaded XP, does your motherboard need any specific additional drivers installing - might be worth reloading these as well.
Have a look on the motherboard web site and see if they have any tools to test the motherboard (a few do but not many)
Just looking on the net for USB testing stuff, as my version of trouble shooter has no USB tester on it

Richard,
Thanks for that.
USB is enabled in the BIOS.
Might be a good excuse to replace my cheap Aldi Medion Mobo with a SFF Shuttle PC!
