Had one of our PC's develop a noisey graphics card fan, So phoned up dell as we have 3 years on site warrenty, As we use specialist graphics cards and Elsa had gone out of business the said they would have to replace the card.
So the Service engineer turns up to day opens the PC up uder the desk, I asked him if it wanted it on top of the desk, he said no. Next minute he is taking allsorts out of the machine. at this point I walked out of the room. I spoke to one of our guys at work and said I did not think the guy from Dell knew what he was doing. 10 minutes later I go back into the office and he informs me that the new card is faulty and there is a fault on the motherboard so he will have to come back tomorrow with a new card and a new motherboard.
Only problem is that me and 2 others were using files on that computer and now he has left it inoperable. It won't even boot up! great for just a fan being noisey!
So I wait till he has left the car park in his car then disconect the pc put it on the bench and see what he had done, There was a bar going accross the machine holding the card down with 2 slots in he had put the card in the wrong slot on the clamp so the card was twisted. I undid the clamp and took the card out there was fluff and alsorts in the AGP slot no wonder nothing worked. I then vacuumed out the slot and reput the graphic's card in repositioned the clamp to the correct slot. I then turned the pc on and it works!!!!!!!!!
Bloody idiot
Cant decide wether to report him or just let him put new motherboard etc in the machine as it only has 2 months left in warrenty so the machine will be rebuilt with new bits.

Let him come back with the new graphics card and motherboard, then demonstrate the machine working and explain what you did to fix it. The wasted trip might help the point sink in - just don't let him break your now working PC.
I've a rather different Dell story. My laptop has had an intermittant display problem since new, and as it's now almost out of warranty I finally decided to get it fixed. I dealt with a very pleasant and intelligent call centre agent in India, who arranged for my PC to be collected and boxed up the next day. The PC arrived at Dell two days later, was repaired and shipped out the same day, and I now have it back with a nice new LCD. Fingers crossed, it seems OK at the moment.

Yes, report it to the helpdesk.
The company that I work for does some of the Dell service calls however different postcodes use different companies. Either way, do make a formal complaint.
Dell supply the parts for each repair. My money is on them not supplying the right part for your machine in the first place, hence the engineer can't do anything without the right part from Dell.
They shouldn't hobble your machine tho. Do report them.
Cheers,
Nick.
PS - was the fan twitching back the curtains and gossiping with the neighbours?

Chiark have you told him about my post LOL.
Nobody has come back to fix it! Spoke to dell on the phone and told them, They apologised profusely. New bits not in stock so will have to wait till Friday before they fix it.

Indeed, having worked for a reseller we employed a mix of great technical engineers and total gimps who I wouldn't trust not to cut themselves on a sponge!!!!
Saying that I did once manage to set fire to a server by trapping some wired LOL
