We use all sorts.... as long as it gets the job done, the better.... although maintaining integrity of evidence is a totally different ball-game.
We use Guidance Software's Encase, as well as Access Data's Forensic Toolkit.
Not cheap.... but very good.

Thx Burr - will let you know tomorrow.
Hopefully, I've been extra careful and backed it up on my works' PC

Maybe this is more appropriate? Might save you having to post the card to me?

Burr,
I take it you work in computer forensics?
It must be a very interesting field of work.
May I ask how you got into it? It's something (along with IT security) that I've always been interested in.

I've got 10 years service, and have my own personal hobbyist PC background (no official qualifications - or none b4 I joined the department anyway)
I've now been in charge of the unit for 4 months, and we're doing very well - I'd say we're one of the busiest forces in the country as far as computer crime goes!
Its hard to explain on here. Give me a bell at work - 0845 6060606 and ask for DC Steve Hirst (Computer Crime Unit). I'll happily speak on the phone, although if I'm busy I might have to get back to you.

Anyone know whats the best product to use for an NTFS disk? PCInspector doesn't do NTFS by the looks of it. Have tried Ontracks Easy Recovery but has recovered a pst file into about 20 small psts which is useless. Maybe part of the pst data has been overwritten and not the programs fault but want to try other apps to see if they give the same results or can recover the file as one whole file.

Hi **************,
The only problem I find when trying to install 'file recovery' applications after file(s) have been deleted is that you can overwrite the area of the disc where the file(s) used to be hence destroying any chance of a perfect recovery.
Ideally something which runs of a CD or Floppy disc is ideal in these situations.
Dunno if this one fits on a floppy but its says it fixes NTFS and its FREE!

Cheers Frank, thats an issue I have already raised with my colleague who is doing it, I did say that installing new stuff takes the risk of overwriting the sectors on the disk but the software had already been installed. I think this is what may have happened causing the lage pst file to be fragmented on recovery. However just want to try another piece of software to see if the same thing happens.

No probs,
Alternatively I suppose you could always wack your HDD into someone elses PC as a slave to get around overwriting issue.
Give that package I linked to a bash. It seems ok to me.

Try using Knoppix (boots into Linux from a CD) or you'll have to take the laptop to bits and slave the drive onto another system.
Then use ERP, Encase, or FTK?

Cheers BuRR but how will Knoppix help? I have knoppix in my draw (handy for asteroids when on late shift ) but dont understand what I can do from within knoppix to recover data using programs that would have to be installed anyway?
Also have looked up encase this morning, but whats ERP and FTK?

ERP - Easy Recovery Pro
FTK - Forensic Tookit (Access Data)
As for Knoppix - there are forensic "flavours" of it out there, just a matter of finding the one you need. SPADA is a very good version, but not that easy to get hold of.

The Easy Recovery Pro is the one that recovered the pst file as about 20 different files. I'm starting to think that some sectors that were used for the file have been overwritten and thats why ERP recovered the file in pieces as opposed to one large file. The segments are no use as the file header on the original file is needed to be able to see any data (im guessing this as file creation and headers etc is not my strongest area )
