Default CPU Fan sounds grim - PC cutting out

I guess it is struggling to get enough airflow going.
Are there any apps (Free) that can monitor fan speed and CPU heat whilst running windows. ( I know it can be monitored from bios but I need to be sending emails / lurking in SNET etc )

Would a liberal spraying of WD40 sort the sod out or it that likely to make it go pop ??

Motherboard Monitor 5 is also very good - freeware program for monitoring fan speeds, voltages, temperatures etc.

A wide range of add-ins are available to do lots of other clever things too (drive LCD displays etc).

Cheers,

Alex

Cheers i'll check that out.

I also took the fan out - there was about a ton of dust in it which is now on the floor. Bit of a pain getting the fan back in but so eventually and it sounds a bit better.

If your PC is locking up/cutting out then the first thing I'd always check is the fan. If the fan is clogged to buggery with dust then this is almost definately the cause.

My advice is take the fan off the heat sink, get a paint brush in there and scrub both the heat sink and the fan. And reassemble. 9 times out of 10 this works, if you find that the fan is making a horrible noise whilst running then the bearings are gone. You can peel back the sticker and stick some 3 in 1 in there, but this wont last permanently. Long term fix in this case is to change the fan.

Dear zhastaph,

I added a rear fan to blow out of the back (with LED's)

Still lost power

Added a front fan to suck air in (again with LED's)

Still lost power

Added a new "Case" fan CPU fan ? and all has been sweet as a nut

Q-Tek Stevenage price £7.05
Maplin Stevenage price £3.65

No Contest

Maybe the fan is fu**ed........... I had a case fan which got very noisy and wasn't shifting air......... the bearing had gone and it wasn't spinning up to proper speed.

Got a direct replacement from PCWorld for £6 IIRC.
